Rooks County, Kansas

Day Trip Itinerary

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Dessin Fournir Companies in Plainville

The tour begins with a visit to Dessin Fournir Companies in Plainville.  Dessin Fournir was a finalist in the 8 Wonders of Kansas Commerce competition.  This high end furniture manufacturer features pieces that have been used in movie sets, celebrity homes, NFL football stadium suites, and more.  With at least 6 main buildings housing the company, it will be a challenge to see all of this international company.

10:45 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Damar

After a short 15 minute drive to the French Canadian community of Damar, the group will tour St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, a finalist in the 8 Wonders of Kansas Architecture competition.  The classic Romanesque design is a glowing example of the importance that early settlers to Rooks County placed on religion. The church had it’s first mass celebrated in 1917. The church was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.  Lunch at the Damar Cafe

The group could then have lunch at the quaint Damar Cafe, serving great homemade food throughout the week.  If time allows, the group could do a quick shopping trip at Fleur de Lis Gift Shop just down the street, or visit the French Quarter Visitor’s Center.

12:30 p.m. – 1:15 p.m.  Drive to Stockton, driving tour of Webster Lake and State Park

On the way to Stockton, the group will pass by one of the western-most state parks in Kansas, Webster Lake and State Park.  A short driving tour will allow the group to see this reservoir built for flood control starting in 1952.

1:15 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.   Rooks County Courthouse

Arriving in Stockton, the group can take a short restroom break at the Rooks County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Historic Register and was nominated for the 8 Wonders of Kansas Architecture.  A short talk about the courthouse and it’s unique features can be arranged.

1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.   Baxter’s Bait and Tackle (Little Cabela’s locally)

The 8 Wonders tour continues with a visit to the Baxter’s Bait and Tackle located on Main Street just around the corner from the courthouse.   This outdoors shop is known as Little Cabela’s locally because of it’s wide selection of outdoor supplies and gear.  Baxter’s was a finalist for the 8 Wonders of Kansas Commerce.  Other shopping on Stockton’s Main Street is convenient.

Depending on time, other tours could be arranged before heading home.  Contact Rooks County Economic Development at 785-425-6881 or by email at rooksed@ruraltel.net for more information.
